DEFINITION: National estimates of the percentage of the population lying below the poverty line are based on surveys of sub-groups, with the results weighted by the number of people in each group. Definitions of poverty vary considerably among nations. For example, rich nations generally employ more generous standards of poverty than poor nations.

Hi Vincent -- if you follow the link at the top of the chart to 'view all countries', you'll get the data for the developed countries. In the US, for example, about 12% of the population lives below the national poverty line; national definitions of 'poverty' varies between countries.

Hi Rach, the profile of Korea will give you most of this information, and for more, follow the links.

Really USA is the poorest country. Its debt runs into the quintrillions and can never be repaid. That is why Saddam Hussein had to be overthrown. He wanted all the Arab oil exporters to trade in Euros. The truth of the US deficit is that it spells ruin for the USA.

Hi Michelle, you can create a graph from the data on Denmark's total population or population growth rate. However, while you can see the graph online, in order to download or print it, you need to be a supporter.

The statistic of Turkey belongs to 2002. Could you update it for 2004?

No way can 25% of romanians be below poverty line. You need to check your stats again. It is incorrect. It is about 15.6%

I just read that to be considered under the line of poverty people must be living on $1.08 (US money in 1993) which is equivalent to about $1.40 US money now. No one can live on that. People cannot even live on $10 US dollars a day. I think the poverty line needs to be adjusted.

So Thailand has less poverty than the UK! I beg to differ.

It's interesting that....Canada has a greater portion of its population in poverty than does the US. Unfortunately, all the statistics that I have seen so far seems to back up this notion!!

USA is the richest nation. We just spend much more than we earn which is fine in the short term. It can be repaid. Many people survive on less that $1 a day. I could if the cost of living was less than $1 a day.

I dont think Zambia should be at the top, because from a U.n website, it states that the percentage below poverty is 68%.

Australia is not in this list. No poor in Australia? I doubt it. The Aboriginals have it pretty tough.
